The New Resume Rules: The 7 Hints for Evaluating Your Resume

Today, we aim to highlight the importance of effective resume writing to all job seekers out there. Taken from the recent presentation from the co-founder of YourPartTime.com, Janet Tan (you can follow her on Facebook and Twitter). She called it the 7 Golden Rules of Resume.

Rule#1: Clear Job Search Objective
A professional summary at the top of your resume with clear objective. The objective should vary for different job positions/company that you are applying. This sells you like nothing else on your resume does.

Rule#2: Market yourself by using the right marketing tools
Selling yourself through quantifying your accomplishments and highlighting your accomplishment. Do not be afraid to mention the exact post you are in. For example, instead of "I organized a system to track outside vendors", put "Office Manager". Conclude with a real result, like "reduced operating costs by one-third". This will boost your credentials significantly as you have figures and numbers to show.

Rule#3: Clear and Concise
Resumes that are easy on the eyes are in. Hot resumes are organized with bullet points, not paragraphs, and have enough white space to look clean and visually interesting. Gone are the days where resumes are "with large chunks of unbroken text" that require recruiters to slow down. Chances are they won't take the time.

Rule#4: Know your strengths and highlight them
Again sell, sell, sell. Highlighting all recent events or work that you have participated in is the "in" thing. Link these events to your personal strengths/characteristics and how these will influence the company that you applying for. And never allow your resume to be outdated - which also speaks volume of yourself.

Rule#5: Show what you know
Being up-to-date with the current issues like social networking. Including your LinkedIn or other social network address in your resume's header. Make sure it's a custom ("vanity") URL if it's LinkedIn (these are free). Not being up-to-date only shows your ignorance and care free lifestyle which is a big no-no.

Rule#6: Show who you know
Show not only what you know, but who. In other words, by showing what as mentioned above, you indirectly inform people who you are associating with. Take for example, your work with the HR Dept before, therefore your LinkedIn account should have at least some sort of relation with the HR communities or groups. Then, you can associate these people with you and might even get some good recommendations!

Rule#7: Have someone else review your resume
Friends, relatives, ex-colleagues, etc. Someone should review it before you send it out. It's always better to get feedback from someone else in not only resume but everything you do.

5 Ways to Motivate Yourself (part-time job seekers)!

Forced to work part-time during the holidays your parents? Boring? Not relevant to you? Fret not. Read on to see how some of these ways will change your perspective on working part-time once and for all. How exactly do you make part-time jobs as interesting as your other activities/hobbies that are exciting and engaging at the same time?

#1. Find out what motivates you
Ask yourself this simple question. Ask yourself what do you want in the future? By asking the question, you can relate your future goals to your present needs. For example, the part-timer says he/she wants to be an artist. Listen, acknowledge, and embrace the answer and realize that you can possibly apply your skills now by allowing yourself to create recognition posters (I know you are already doing these, right?), work on the organization newsletter, or any other art project that will benefit the organization you worked with. Ensure you use your hidden talent wisely and exploit it to the fullest extent.

#2. Orient yourself properly
Take time to learn job duties and go over what is allowed and not allowed, e.g., personal telephone calls, use of organization property, etc. This can avoid confusion and potentially embarrassing situations which will in turn demoralize yourself. Always double and triple check your job scope(s.

#3. Check yourself when communicating
Remember, for your part-timers, this may be your first experience in the workplace. You may be a little scared and may show it in a number of different ways (rebelling against requests, not working with others, or showing up late or not at all). Check yourself when communicating with your employer and colleagues so that they are always discussed with positive expectations so that both groups know you are glad to have them. It will go a long way to letting yourself feel motivated to be there.

#4. Pick a mentor
Even after proper orientation, you will be confused on certain occasion. It is common in most workplace. Assign yourself a full-time worker to be a mentor. The mentor will feel good about the added responsibility and you will feel more like part of the team. However, it is important to pick someone who is patient, has good communication skills and has the time to answer questions. Else, he/she will be nightmare!

#5. Eliminate hard feelings with employer/colleagues
Eliminate any perceived or real hard feelings between yourself and employer and/or colleague immediately if you one. For example, for full time staff working there, you can explain to them why you are bringing in part-time help and that their jobs are not being threatened. You can make jobs easier and working environment more peaceful with this habit.

If you follow these methods truthfully, we guarantee that you will be well on your way to realize that working part-time is not too bad after all. Basic rule: Learn everything that you possibly can and have fun along the way! =)

Beware of Job Scams!

Job offers nowadays are aplenty in the market. From jobs that promises high salary and considerably less working hours are becoming more prevalent in recent times. There are numerous scam companies out there which are heartless and yearning to earn fast cash from you. Therefore, beware of the job scams trend. Below are just some of the common examples of the illegitimate advertisements and some suggested ways to beat these scams. Take serious note, job seekers!

1. Jobs that require a processing/administration fee
This is the most common tactic used by con jobs. Jobs like these include typist, copywriter, data entry clerk and many home-based jobs. The particular company will do almost anything to secure your trust; for eg. by emailing applicants directly and taking desperate measures to explain in great detail why they are legitimate. Once the deposit is paid, the contact person becomes very difficult to reach on the phone. Another worst-case-scenario situation that an employer will typically confirms and calls applicants in for an interview but will request a head start payment for administration or consultation fee (or so it seems). Once applicants have signed the "job agreement" and payment is made, the company will give excuses on why the applicant cannot be hired. Excuses such as how the client's company has not made their selection or how they have been robbed and are under police investigation are not uncommon excuses.

2. Jobs that has a formal letterhead/signature to trick you
This is another way to convince applicants that the company they are applying for is legitimate. By using an "official" letterhead, the job seeker is informed formally that he or she may start the job any time. But before that, job seekers are requested to pay for the processing, procurement and acquisition of proper working permit. The employer will of course mention in the letter that all these fees will be "reimbursed later". To seal the deal, the letterhead also includes an "official' signature by a legal advisor. This way, most people will be convinced that the company seem real and will not hesitate to make any upfront payment.

Solution #1. Check for the real person, address, contact number, etc physically and on the Internet.
By going the extra mile to find out who we are dealing with will go a long way. With the Internet easily accessible nowadays, please check for the legitimacy of the address and the person you are speaking to on the other end. If the particular company is not online, chances are they are NOT real! It’s the truth considering that most companies are already online given the fact that social media is on the rise at the moment. To double check, go directly to the address provided to see if it’s a fake and what not.

Solution #2. Get advice from friends, colleagues and professionals.

Without a doubt, the simplest and smartest thing to do. Call up a friend (it will be a bonus if he/she is involved in recruitment industry) and seek help regarding this problem of yours. Get colleagues or ex-colleagues for valuable advice. Seek professional head hunters and recruitment industry specialist to access the legitimacy of the job. This will ensure you will not fall under the scam jobs category any longer. Else, you will be left depressed, jobless and poorer by a few hundred ringgit!

Malaysia Youth Career Survey 2009

The job scene for our generation sure has changed. Jobstreet, Asia's largest online portal recognized this need and initiated this research project to allow youths to understand the job market better and also help employers to shape better job positions for today's generation. As a joint effort with YouthSays, the Annual Youth Career Survey was opened up to the YouthSays community as well as jobseekers on Jobstreet. A total of 3,217 youths between ages 15 to 35 volunteered to participate in this online survey. Official results for this survey can be found HERE. I’m merely highlighting what is relevant and beneficial in the job seekers point-of-view.

1. 39% of the respondents stated that stable and high income jobs are important factors that lead to a dream career whilst 27.5% stated passion and interest. This proved that a stable job is still very much important in determining an ideal job compared to a not-so-secure job like being an entrepreneur.

2. 32.5% stated that they themselves are the motivator to their dream career with parents and family taking a back step with 26% and friends with 16.5%. This undoubtedly proved that absolutely nobody can change your mind on your career choice once you are certain that that is the right path for you. Not even the conventional mindset of family and peer pressure.

3. 36.4% of those interviewed believed that they can become millionaire by age of 30-40 years old.

4. A whopping 88% believed that education and good grades have helped them pursue their dream career and 83.37% of them are enrolling themselves in self improvement courses to achieve their dream career. Malaysians in general still strongly believe in scoring good grades to have a chance to help them pursue their dream career and they are taking the extra mile doing so (in self improvement courses).

5. However, a huge 62.63% stated that finding a job in Malaysia today is not easy. Plus, the current economic downturn has certainly not helped prospective graduates. Therefore, instilling oneself with appropriate skills are extremely important and finding your niche will be the key to securing your dream career.

6. 90.27% of them believed on work loyalty with the company and 95.05% of them agreed that employers’ responsibility to provide adequate job training and guidance to new employees. Companies around Malaysia, heads up! Job seekers are not getting what they deserved here! They are so loyal yet some do not get the proper training to gain the necessary technical skills needed.

7. A positive 55%, 63%, 71%, 70% and 64% in the age range of 17 and below, 18-22, 23-27, 28-32 and 33 and above respectively hunt for jobs on online portal such as JobStreet.com and YourPartTime.com. And believe me not, the future will be more that that! With the Internet and social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) playing a HUGE role in shaping the way youths are thinking and doing today, we can only imagine what they will bring in the near future!

8. 56% are willing to put in longer hours for a higher pay.

9. An astounding 75% will dedicate their life to their career. This serves as a clear indication that Malaysians are a good bunch of people that will not “jump boat” for a better offer if the particular company can surpass their expectations to a dream career!

To participate in further and discuss what you think about these results with other YouthSays members who participate in this survey, see HERE. Hopefully this insightful survey by JobStreet in collaboration with YouthSays will benefit all job seekers; especially the youths in Malaysia.

Future Trends in HR Operating Models

Based on an interesting article from the web HERE, I am merely just quoting the main points stated in this highly intriguing idea. The future of HR and recruitment will look like this, perhaps?

1. Workforce and economic changes will require HR to allocate more resources to delivering HR Strategy
- The key drivers for change includes unprecedented economic change, workforce challenges, different technologies for different generation and technological and social enables (like social network sites)
- In short, the new HR Operating Model will be focused on 4 main agenda - workforce, economy, HR Vendor Market and TECHNOLOGY.

2. New tools will enable improvements in collaboration, productivity and managing the workforce
- We are using a variety of social media and other tools from Twitter to Google to LinkedIn.
- In HR, according to research by Communications Management, 8 out of 10 HR professionals belong to online communities or social networking sites in their daily work. One in three (32.3%) have already asked for supplier recommendations through this medium.

3. HR Outsourcing market will restructure to deliver standardised services

4. HR as a corporate function will be leaner, with Employees and Managers doing more

5. HR Skills will develop in Change Management, Project Management, Vendor Management and Technology

Interesting to see how the HR sector will change a year or maybe 10 years from now. Stay tuned for more interesting write-up regarding HR/recruitment and how social media are definitely playing its part on this.

How Social Media are Slowly but Surely Taking Over Conventional Job-Hunting

As defined by Wikipedia, social media is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. Among some of the popular social media in the market now includes Blogger & Wordpress (blogging); Flickr (photo sharing); Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn (social networking) and YouTube (video sharing).

Allow me to share some statistics regarding social media taken from the web:
1. Facebook now has over 250 million users and these users are sharing over 10 billion photos.
2. YouTube is streaming 1.2 billion videos a day, worldwide.
3. Unique visitors in Twitter are at 32 million in April 2009 and each day, Twitter users are generating roughly 18 million updates.
4. Recent survey done by YouthSays.com found that in 900 respondents, 95% of them have Friendster account, 90% have Facebook and 38% of them have a Twitter account.

Human resources are now looking towards non-conventional ways to look for candidates. Gone are the days where job seekers rely on physical and online advertising print and word of mouth to hunt for jobs; be it full time or part-time. Social media is the way in the near future. Using the power of social network, job seekers can feel connected emotionally with a sense of loyalty. On the other hand, employers can leverage on its scalability and efficiency to obtain the ideal candidates to work for them.

One of the most powerful social media tool in the market that all of us can literally use is none other Twitter. With its unique feature of being able to share virtually everything in a matter of seconds or in Twitter language re-tweet (RT), Twitter has become an online “viral effect” which is virtually dimensionless. We can safely say that Twitter will undoubtedly play a HUGE role in the social media scene of job-hunting.

Therefore, follow us in Twitter today by clicking HERE. We also encourage all of you to introduce your Twitter account HERE. Let us all share the power of social media with everyone today!

Human Power for Your Company
