When the going gets tough, the tough go job-hunting online

“A few years ago I employed a clown who was also a part-time tax consultant,” says dotcom investor David Lee. Usually an imposing figure, Lee can't help but chuckle at the memory of the resourceful person who worked in two vastly different areas to supplement his income.

A clown-cum-tax consultant? What could be more ridiculous, especially in these times when everyone is whispering nervously about their job security? “Oh, it's not ridiculous—as far as I know he still does this," says Lee. "I don’t know how much money this chap made from being a clown, but he definitely wasn’t cheap!”

Lee, together with twenty-something dotcom entrepreneur Janet Tan and tech industry veteran Gerard Lim, created YourPartTime.com, an Internet portal that seeks to hook up prospective employees with part-time work.

Project Revitalise to help job seekers

The MCA has been proactive in rendering assistance to those affected by the current economic crisis, regardless of their race or religion, said party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

Project Revitalise, an employment programme aimed at providing online part-time job matching and training opportunities for job seekers and employers, is the latest project by the MCA ICT Resource Centre (MIRC)and YourPartTime.com.

The programme is supported by MCA Youth. Present are (from left) treasurer-general Tan Sri Tee Hock Seng, secretary-general DatuK Wong Foon Meng and YourPartTime.com director Gerard Lim.

Yesterday, 95 companies opened booths offering more than 4,000 jobs at the MCA Job fair, which was the national launch platform for Project Revitalise.

Ong said the job fair epitomised the sense of hope to Malaysians that it was not all gloomy.

“There are thousands of jobs available. It is a question of whether you want to grab the job opportunity, relearn new skills and change your mindsets,” he said.

He added that the job fair would be organised in other cities outside the Klang Valley so that those affected by the current economic slowdown could be helped immediately.

Thousands of jobs on offer at MCA fair on Thursday

PETALING JAYA: Those seeking employment are urged to attend the MCA’s job fair on Thursday which will see thousands of jobs being offered by various employers and an online job matching provider.

MCA’s ICT Resource Centre (MIRC) chief executive officer Andrew Wong said they were expecting more than 5,000 job seekers at the fair which will open at 9.30am at Wisma MCA.

“We urge everyone seeking employment to come to this job fair as there will be onsite interviews, career talks, free training and job -matching sessions for job seekers all day long,” he said in a statement yesterday.

More than 70 exhibitors have confirmed participation at the one-day fair including top-notch companies from various industries.

MCA president and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat will open the fair.

It is part of Project Revitalise announced previously by Deputy Finance Minister and MCA vice-president Datuk Kong Cho Ha.

The project is an employment programme aimed at providing online part-time job matching and training opportunities for job seekers and employers.

“It is to promote and educate companies to consider hiring workers on a part-time basis rather than retrenching, freeze hiring or downsizing.

“The MCA job fair will be the national launch platform for Project Revitalise that brings employers and job seekers together,” the statement said.

The event is a joint collaboration among MIRC, YourPartTime.com, xTrain and MCA Youth’s economic special task force. For details, log on to www.YourPartTime.com/McaJobFair or contact MIRC at 1-300-88-MIRC.

Work calls

DURING his second year in Universiti Putra Malaysia, Michael Tan and his friends proposed a part-time job website in a young entrepreneurs’ competition. The idea was inspired by the countless recruitment text messages Michael received during the March 8 general election last year.

His team did not win the competition, but its idea caught the attention of one of the judges, Gerard Lim, who helped it set up YourPartTime.com last year.

An entrepreneur at heart, Micheal took a year off his studies to focus fully on the business.

“I’m the only one in my year who dropped two semesters to run a business; all my coursemates are graduating in April.

“My parents are supportive of me when I told them I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Now that I have a mentor in Gerard and business partners, I have to sacrifice a year for this,” says Michael.

His sister Janet quit her job selling luxury cars to join him. The two of them meet clients and market their products.

Meanwhile, Michael’s other business partners, engineering students Lee Jia Fuh and Chin Je Mein, handle things like checking resumes, writing newsletters and managing the website. Both are still studying.

YourParttime.com offers a platform to match job seekers and employers. With about 500 employers offering jobs in seven job categories, and some 7,000 job seekers on their list, the one-year-old company is growing quickly.

On April 9, the company will be officially launching Project Revitalise, a collaboration with MCA’s ICT Resource Centre (MIRC) and xTrain to provide re-training and subsequent part-time job matching for job seekers.

But the project is not targeted at job seekers alone.

“We want to introduce and educate employers on the benefits of hiring part-time workers. It lowers their costs and increases productivity. Many retrenched and unemployed people are looking for jobs, and we play an important role at this time,” Michael explains.

“We have a search-and-shortlist team to do the checks before we submit a list of potential employees to the employer. It’s our value-added service,” says Michael, adding that they call up the employers on a monthly basis to get their feedback.

Their long-term aim is also to build up a database of quality job seekers who wish to work part-time for a longer period.

YourPartTime.com also has a star rating system for employers to rate employees, and vice versa. Job seekers are invited to attend soft skills development and resume writing seminars to boost their employability.

The team also conducted a soft skills seminars for graduating students at a college last year. Michael believes that tertiary students have plenty of time to set goals for their life and have the resources to achieve them.

“Education is important in developing analytical skills. You have to also explore what the industry wants and pick up interpersonal and communication skills,” he says.

Venturing into business for the past one year has been a fulfilling adventure for Michael. But he may have to cut down on the business meetings and running around for a while. He’s going back to university this July.
